About the One Haiti One Million Trees
The One Haiti One Million Trees Project (or Project 1H1MT) aims to help restore Haiti’s natural environment by planting and protecting one million trees in the country. With a growing population of 10 million people, the country has seen its once rich and exotic vegetation slowly disappear from its mountain tops and low-lands. The constant deforestation of Haiti (resulting from a strange mix of factors linked to its topography, geography, history, politics, and economy) has turned it into a disaster prone environment where human lives are destroyed routinely year after year, along with various animals and plants species. As the world is slowly waking up to the urgent need to actively care for the planet, efforts focused specifically on Haiti, in order to help restore the country’s ecosystems will likely receive better support from concerned people.
To facilitate the management of resources and increase the likelihood of success, the project will be divided into 10 sub-projects corresponding to the 10 geographic departments of the country. This segmentation also takes into account the possible particularities of the ecosystems and agro-ecosystems that exist in each region. Apart from these direct results of the project in term of new trees planted throughout the country, it is important also to realize that some impacts, although real, will not be easily measured and quantified. For example,
The project will also have a significant and positive economic impact in the localities where the tree planting activities will take place, in terms of short term employment or economic activities touching small merchants or retailers.
The enrollment and participation of volunteers from local institutions (academic, religious, social) will contribute to the general awakening that’s taking place around the world concerning our direct and/or distant environment; many of these volunteers will likely continue the journey beyond this project activities.
Many of the people and families who will receive and plant these trees on their lands will also develop a new appreciation of the role they can personally play in taking care of their environment for their own benefit.
The One Haiti One Million Trees Project (or Project 1H1MT) will be executed throughout Haiti by Doxa Foundation International during a period of ten (10) consecutive years, from 2021 to 2030. Doxa Foundation International is a 501-c3 humanitarian organization working in Haiti since 2008
